CBS REPORT CARD!

CBS – The Tiffany Network as it’s called. I assume this has nothing to do with the 80’s pop super star of the same name? Doubtful. Okay - Moving along. I am only going to talk about the shows that I’ve seen, so if I omit some shows, it’s nothing personal – it’s just that there’s probably something better on.
CLUBHOUSE: This was the first new CBS show I watched this fall, and I went into it hoping it would hit a home run, or at least double. But after the first episode I felt like I was intentionally walked. If that makes any sense. Probably not, so let me clarify: I was disappointed. Jeremy Sumpter is good as the young bat boy, and I liked Christopher Lloyd as the old clubhouse manager, even Dean Cain redeems himself after his turn as host of “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not.” But it still reeked too much of “family drama.” Basically “Full House,” but an hour long and on a baseball field. It was enough to make me look for other programming options. And I guess I wasn’t alone. It has already been relocated to Saturday nights and looks like it will soon be traded for a better show to be named later.
LISTEN UP: Well if you’ve read the TVadviceguy review of this show then you already know: I’d rather watch 30 minutes of the Susan Lucci collection on QVC. ”Listen Up” is abysmal. It gives any aspiring TV screenwriter hope, because if this show can make it on network television, then surely your script stands a chance. And I have given this show chance after chance to work. But time after time I am subjected to jokes that are DOA, plot lines that are boring, and casting that begs the question, “this is a joke, right?!” Top candidate for worst show of the year. And what’s most disturbing, is that CBS just picked up the back 9.
CSI: NY: I didn’t like CSI: Miami. Something about that David Caruso rubs me the wrong way. He’s too smug. Too cocky. Too, Caruso. I dunno, but anyway, this CSI: NY is better. I was on the original CSI bandwagon from the first episode, and I still think the original is the best (with the exception of William Peterson’s creepy beard). But this NY edition aint too shabby. And it helps to have Gary Sinise in the mix. But his co-star Melina Kanakaredes suffers from a name with too many vowels, and hair that takes up the entire frame. Something to think about.
CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE: This show is opposite one of my favorite new shows of the season, “Jack & Bobby,” so I had to go out of my way to tape this show. And what a waste. I don’t know how a sitcom can assemble such a great cast but not be able to assemble a single joke. I had high hopes for this show, but was let down. With that cast, I still have hope that it can get better.
DR. VEGAS – This show crapped out before I had a chance to see it.
Well, I think that’s all the new CBS shows this season. Turns out I did see just about every new show on CBS. I guess I’ll give CBS’ new crap, er, crop of shows a C-
