CBS REPORT CARD!

I'll be honest, folks... I haven't really checked out
too many new shows on CBS this year. Well, in my
defense, the network didn't introduce too many new
shows this season, and the ones they did looked like
they should be approached with a Hazmat suit ("Viva
Laughlin?!")
So here are the two I have watched:
"The Big Bang Theory" - As I said earlier in my review
of the pilot, this is a fairly funny show that begins
to grate after the ten thousandth nerd joke. The cast
is fine, the writing is above average, and while the
show is anything from original, it's still worth
watching if nothing else is on. Unfortunately for me,
there is; I watch "Prison Break."
"Kid Nation" - For whatever reason, there was
controversy surrounding this reality show about kids
who are left alone to run their own city. One kid
drinks bleach, and suddenly the show is
"irresponsible." Whatever! I used to drink bleach for
breakfast! Anyway, I checked out the show to see how
low the reality genre had sunk but instead I was
shocked to find a very interesting and emotional show
about how kids, ages 8-15, can pull together for the
good of the community. Sure there is every reality
show cliche here, but at least it feels different when
it's not a bunch of whining adults. Kids are supposed
to whine.
And that's it. I haven't seen "Moonlight" yet, and
"Viva Laughlin" disappeared faster than a $20 bill in a Double Diamond Deluxe slot machine!
So, based on the two shows I have seen, CBS gets a "B"
for their new shows.

Now onto the CW, a network partially owned by CBS, and
another network where I have only watched two new
series.
"Aliens in America" - The CW has a cute, funny, smart
sitcom on it's hands. Sadly, as with most CW shows,
nobody is paying any attention. The fish-out-of-water
story works flawlessly thanks to smart and funny
writing, and strong performances by Adhir Kalayan and
Dan Byrd as two adolescents from different parts of
the world going through very similar situations.
"Reaper" - Here is another good show that is likely to
be forgotten at the water cooler. Led by an appealing
cast, the show's fun premise about a dude who's
parents sold his soul to the devil, is part comedy,
part action, part Ghostbusters. It's dark, yet funny.
Silly, yet smart. It's a good show.
So with only two shows to base my grade on - sorry
"Gossip Girl," I missed your episodes - I guess I have
to give the CW an A for it's new shows!
