So I’ve been watching the World Series, well all the post season baseball really, which means I have been forced to watch the promos for the upcoming season on FOX about 3,492 times now. So, because we like to shake things up here at TVadviceguy (usually it’s a martini), I thought I’d try a little something different. I am going to review some FOX shows based on the promos they have been shoving down our throats for the past month. Sound fun? No?! Whatever, then go find some other tongue in cheek TV opinion page!! Ok, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean that. I got angry. It’s the martini. It won’t happen again. Now, on with the review…

Let’s start with “House.” Or is it “House MD?” Or is it, oh who cares. Here we go again with the too-cool-for-school “Doctor” who can figure out medical mysteries better and more creatively than anyone else. I can’t quite put my finger on what turns me off about this show, no wait, yes I can. It’s that damn “half beard” that Dr. House will apparently wear the entire season. Have you ever known anybody, in the course of your entire life, who always keeps stubble like that? Not a beard, not just a 5 o’clock shadow, but that permanent in between thing? I bet the answer is no. And if the answer is yes, then you must have been friends with Don Johnson. Oh, and then there’s the cane. I’m sure there’s some interesting explanation for this character trait, but for a guy who has to “race against the clock to solve the case” he’d do it much faster if he didn’t have a damn stick to deal with. It’s got a decent cast, but I still expect this medical drama to flat line by February.

Next up we have “The Rebel Billionaire” where FOX brags about giving away the biggest prize in reality show history; Richard Branson’s job! And according to the commercials, the way one gets to be the President of the Virgin companies is by tightrope walking between helicopters. If that was the case, the contestants on “Fear Factor” should all be heading Fortune 500 companies. I don’t really know much more about this show because I tune out the commercials. I just see another reality show knock off. These networks apparently don’t learn that the rip offs suck. “The Benefactor” was put out of its misery early. “The Apprentice” has dropped in the ratings, but still we get another watered down version of the same show.

Oh, but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel! “My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss” premiers November 7, and this is shaping up to be my favorite “reality” show of the season. I have no problem with a knock off reality show when it’s a mockery of the whole thing. If the series is as funny as the previews suggest, I think I have found my water cooler show for the new season. If only there was a water cooler at my work. Or people who want to talk to me. Never mind all that. This show looks like a keeper.

Another keeper is “Arrested Development” which, as we all should know by now, won Outstanding Comedy Series at this year’s Emmy Awards. And deservedly so. The previews for the new season look hilarious, and if there’s a TV God at all, this show will find the audience it deserves. I can’t wait for November 7.

Remember that footage of the nanny who got caught on a surveillance camera hitting a little kid over the head with a wooden spoon? I wish someone would have done that to the FOX people who green-lit “Nanny 911.” FOX might have reached a new low with this one. I guess if you have irritating little brats as kids, you might tune in out of curiosity, but for those of us who don’t, why in the world would we want to watch some “Nanny” calm down someone else’s spoiled little kids?

Well that’s all I got for now. FOX better hope they can do better than last year’s crop of losers. Anybody remember “Luis?"
